Abt to help CDC prepare for the next global health emergency

NOVEMBER 2, 2023

ROCKVILLE, MD — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded an Abt Associates-led team a contract to prepare for the next public health emergency. Abt and its partner, HealthVerity, will provide data that federal, state, territory, and local governments and other organizations can use to target interventions and countermeasures in the event of a public health emergency.

The COVID-19 pandemic made it abundantly clear that the nation’s ability to identify and respond to outbreaks fundamentally relies on access to high-quality and timely data for disease surveillance—especially data about vulnerable populations and response capacity. This five-year, $9.2 million contract will help the nation prepare for an effective response.

Abt and HealthVerity will create and disseminate user-friendly data products that will capture key socio-demographic and health information by sourcing, integrating, analyzing, and packaging disparate datasets. The team of data scientists and epidemiologists will combine large data sets from a variety of industry and government sources with massive computing power, automation, analytics, and artificial intelligence. This approach will provide data to inform plans and responses to public health emergencies in an equitable manner that is focused on local communities. Abt brings over two decades of CDC program expertise to the project, which aims to provide practical insights and recommendations to all Americans.

The data that the team will integrate include medical claims data, social media data, data from service providers (healthcare providers, schools, universities, nursing homes, and correctional facilities), market research, and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and other publicly available sources.

“We can’t afford to be unprepared for the next outbreak,” says Gabriella Newes-Adeyi, senior client account lead and advisor to the project. “The work we will do for CDC will give governments at all levels the information they need to safeguard the nation’s health, in particular the health of those most in need.”

HealthVerity launches its Mortality Masterset, powered by Veritas Data Research, to provide the most likely cause of death for health outcomes research

NOVEMBER 7, 2023

PHILADELPHIA, PA — HealthVerity, the leader in synchronizing transformational technologies and real-world data (RWD) to advance the science, today announced the launch of the expertly curated HealthVerity Mortality Masterset, powered by Veritas Data Research.

The solution synchronizes Veritas’ Fact of Death dataset, consisting of over 130 million death records from 1935 to today derived from more than 40,000 public and private sources, with a syndicate of open and closed medical claims assembled by HealthVerity from the nation’s largest de-identified healthcare and consumer data ecosystem. An advanced analytics engine empowered by deterministic and rules-based algorithms processes this synchronized data, retracing each patient’s medical history back 36 months prior from the date of passing, to determine the most likely primary and secondary causes of death. Additionally, each individual is de-identified using a universal HealthVerity ID that allows the Mortality Masterset to be seamlessly synchronized with other data sources for a comprehensive view of the patient journey.

It is important to know not just if a patient died, but whether the cause of death was from the disease being studied to better measure treatment efficacy and overall survival, address any safety issues, and make appropriate public health policy decisions. While cause of death is captured in death certificates that are collected by states and passed onto the CDC, access to these records is restricted, can take up to a year or more to receive, and they are not de-identified or interoperable. Additionally, the cause of death listed on the death certificate is often prone to error, with peer reviewed studies showing error rates ranging from 34% to 52% or even higher. Additionally, cardiac events are over reported on death certificates as a catchall when the true cause of death is unknown.

“Death is a critical endpoint in health research and related disciplines; however, the cause of death is rarely available in public notices and is often inaccurate in official death certificates,” explained Veritas CEO Jason LaBonte. “The Mortality Masterset offering is the first widely-accessible dataset to include cause of death for health research and risk modeling.”

“We saw a need amongst our clients in the life sciences industry to have an accurate cause of death for long-term follow up and health outcome studies, and we’re happy to be able to partner with Veritas to create the Mortality Masterset,” said Andrew Kress, HealthVerity CEO. “By synchronizing this breadth and depth of de-identified data, we are able to provide the most accurate, pre-assembled cause of death determination in a HIPAA-compliant format that allows our clients to start their studies immediately, without having to do additional research on the cause of death.”

The Mortality Masterset is an addition to the growing suite of HealthVerity Mastersets, including the Provider Diversity and Diagnosis Index (PDI) Masterset, Maternal Outcomes Masterset (MOM), Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Masterset, and COVID-19 Masterset, all of which are curated by RWD experts to provide speed to insight for a particular area of study.

WiDS Datathon uses authentic oncology data to teach data science skills and address equity in healthcare for women with breast cancer

PHILADELPHIA, PA — HealthVerity, the leader in synchronizing transformational technologies and real-world data (RWD) to advance the science, is honored to partner with Gilead Sciences to support Women in Data Science (WiDS) for their 7th Annual Datathon Challenge. This year’s challenge, running from September 2023 through June 2024, will address the critical issue of equity in healthcare, specifically for women with metastatic triple negative breast cancer (metastatic TNBC), using RWD.

WiDS, launched at Stanford University in 2015, is an international initiative with a mission of increasing participation of women in all areas of data science. The Datathon is open to the public, giving students and practitioners the opportunity to discover and hone data science skills while solving interesting and critical social impact challenges using well-curated, real-world datasets. The advanced version of the Datathon may also be integrated into college and university courses.

During this year’s challenge, students across the country will use data science and machine learning to predict the time to treatment for women diagnosed with metastatic TNBC, an aggressive cancer that requires urgent and timely treatment. The students will develop models that predict timely treatment based on certain demographic characteristics. The lag time in receiving treatment is a good indicator of disparities in healthcare access. The students are also encouraged to generate additional insights to understand the real-world implications of their predictions.

The Datathon is sponsored by Gilead Sciences who partnered with HealthVerity to secure the curated RWD that the students will be using for the challenge. HealthVerity was able to provide a de-identified dataset of women diagnosed with metastatic TNBC between 2015 and 2018 that included the demographic characteristics needed to understand health equity, including insurance status and geo-demographic data that provides insight into socio-economic factors.

“Gilead worked closely with the Women in Data Science team to select HealthVerity’s dataset for the health equity Datathon due to our ongoing collaboration in using real-world data to ensure diverse representation in clinical trials,” explained Kelly Hoang Ph.D., data scientist and WiDS ambassador at Gilead Sciences. “Making the dataset available is globally part of Gilead’s commitment to diversity and inclusion of stakeholders in our ecosystem, including the data scientists in our industry.”

“HealthVerity is honored to partner with Gilead to use our vast RWD ecosystem and privacy-preserving technologies to support WiDS, help educate our nation’s future data scientists, and increase understanding of the critical issue of health equity and its impact on society,” said Andrew Kress, HealthVerity CEO.

Self-directed solution unlocks the potential of social determinants of health to power precise media and healthcare targeting

PHILADELPHIA, PA — HealthVerity, the leader in synchronizing transformational technologies and real-world data (RWD) to advance the science, today announced the launch of HealthVerity Audience Manager. This disruptive solution provides media agencies and life sciences organizations with a truly self-directed analytics environment that enables previously unattainable insights regarding patient behavior in combination with social determinants of health (SDOH), all in a privacy protected, HIPAA-compliant manner. Audience Manager is ideally suited to synchronize healthcare and SDOH data with ever-more sophisticated cohort modeling to precisely define audience segments for awareness campaigns, therapeutic studies and support programs.

Complex data privacy laws and limited analytics tools have historically made it challenging for media agencies and the life sciences industry to implement patient-centric engagement strategies. As therapies have become increasingly more personalized, it is more important than ever to ensure that the right patients receive the right medications in combination with any required support. Audience Manager is the only solution in the industry to empower media agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers to synchronize proprietary enterprise data with the patient-centric RWD and SDOH data of their choice from the nation’s largest healthcare and consumer data ecosystem in a fully HIPAA-compliant manner. Organizations can leverage this self-directed analytics environment to build comprehensive views of patient journeys by contextualizing patient diagnoses, procedures and therapies with patient-centric social determinants of health, demographics and behaviors. This approach firmly places the power of discovery in the hands of organizations and provides a clear path to design approaches that reach the right patients in the right channels with the right messaging at the right time.

“Audience Manager flips the model on current industry standards that offer only pre-defined or ‘black box’ audience segments,” explained Ben Walker, general manager, media and consumer data at HealthVerity. “Instead, we empower media agencies and life sciences organizations to conduct their own analyses with their data in combination with healthcare and consumer data, all synchronized to unlock previously unattainable outcomes. This approach enables organizations to iterate approaches far more quickly and more accurately instead of hoping that ‘black box’ models are aligned with their outreach objectives.”

HealthVerity Audience Manager can be integrated with HealthVerity Media Measurement, a closed loop marketing solution that synchronizes digital media ad and television exposure data with pharmacy and medical transactions from patients of interest to assess campaign performance, understand the impact of targeting efforts and optimize campaigns in real time, all in a privacy-protected and HIPAA-compliant manner.

“HealthVerity Audience Manager will be a gamechanger for us,” explained Brandon King, SVP activation analytics with Fingerpaint, a full-service healthcare marketing company. “It will allow us to provide our clients with insights that were previously unattainable due to complex HIPAA regulations and data management issues industrywide. With our partnership with HealthVerity, we will be able to integrate Audience Manager with Elevalt, our omnichannel orchestration engine, to not only meet all of our clients’ needs to optimize their campaigns, but also provide activation-ready insights.”

HealthVerity releases its expertly curated Chronic Kidney Disease Masterset to synchronize the science

AUGUST 22, 2023

Curated masterset allows researchers to better track disease progression and develop treatments for a leading cause of death in the U.S.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — HealthVerity, the leader in synchronizing transformational technologies and real-world data (RWD) to advance the science, today announced the launch of the HealthVerity Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Masterset, an expertly curated dataset developed in collaboration with Aetion that synchronizes lab results, commercial, Medicare and Medicaid claims, and electronic medical records (EMRs) from the nation’s largest healthcare and consumer data ecosystem. An addition to our growing suite of HealthVerity Mastersets, including the Provider Diversity Index 2023 edition and the Maternal Outcomes Masterset, the CKD Masterset compiles all CKD-relevant clinical attributes into one comprehensive, research-ready masterset, accelerating research by saving valuable time and resources.

Currently, there is no cure for CKD, a progressive condition that impacts one in seven adults in the U.S., or approximately 37 million people, 90% of whom do not even know they have the disease until it has already advanced to a late stage.1 To slow progression of CKD, which is a leading cause of death in the U.S., researchers need to understand the patient journey.2

The CKD Masterset, consisting of approximately 7 million patients with a confirmed medical diagnosis or lab result, was developed to provide speed to the novel insights that researchers need to understand disease progression, the impact of existing interventions, and patient outcomes over time and in real time. HealthVerity experts standardize and deduplicate the data, ensuring all of the most relevant CKD data points are included without additional noise from RWD, providing a more concise, easy-to-use masterset.

“CKD is complicated by several comorbid conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease,” explained Reyna Klesh, vice president, data products and innovation at HealthVerity. “By integrating the revealing aspects of the journey for patients at every stage of CKD, in a HIPAA-compliant format, we help researchers better understand disease progression to develop effective treatments for the millions of people affected by the disease.”

The closed claims data provides a longitudinal view of the patient journey and the EMR data provides valuable clinical observations, including body mass index, height, weight, smoking status, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, ejection fraction, and alcohol usage. These diagnostic measures allow users to observe changes in vital status and understand risk factors for worsening disease over time. The lab data provides the critical results for understanding what stage of CKD the patient is in, determining kidney function and the extent of damage to the kidneys, including estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGRF), urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR), albumin and creatinine, as well as HbA1c levels. Any duplicative results from these data sources are removed to deliver the most concise results to the user. Race, ethnicity and mortality data is also provided for the most comprehensive view of the CKD patient journey.

HealthVerity will continue to add to their Masterset Series, providing researchers speed to insights through expertly curated datasets that profile some of the most important diseases.

Enhancements support pharmaceutical manufacturers and CROs in synchronizing recruitment to align with disease incidence

PHILADELPHIA, PA — HealthVerity, the leader in synchronizing transformational technologies and real-world data (RWD) to advance the science, today announced the release of the Provider Diversity Index (PDI) 2023 edition with breakthrough enhancements that help pharmaceutical manufacturers to prioritize physicians who are treating patients more reflective of the populations impacted by the conditions being studied.

First introduced in 2020, this nationally-syndicated report synchronizes medical, pharmacy and social determinants of health data from the nation’s largest data ecosystem to calculate the racial diversity of patients for over 1 million physician practices, all in a HIPAA-compliant manner. The HealthVerity PDI is being actively used by clients to identify clinical trial site investigators and to more effectively characterize and recruit patient populations that better reflect the diversity mix of diagnosed patients. New enhancements to the HealthVerity PDI for 2023, such as age range, gender, income range, payer type (commercial, Medicare or Medicaid) and diagnosis further the mission of pharmaceutical manufacturers and CROs in achieving their diversity goals.

Alzheimer’s is an example of a condition that disproportionately affects minorities. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 19% of Black/African American and 14% of Hispanic/Latino adults age 65 and older have Alzheimer’s, compared to 10% of White/Caucasian seniors.1 In contrast, participants in a 2020 clinical trial for an Alzheimer’s medication were 86% White/Caucasian.2 The latest HealthVerity PDI leverages diagnosis in a HIPAA-compliant manner to highlight physicians treating broader cohorts of minority patients whose recruitment could yield more effective clinical trial results.

Age is another important consideration for Alzheimer’s research. The Alzheimer’s Association reported that clinical trial sites for memory impairment drugs do not cohesively align with areas that have larger populations of individuals 60 years of age and older, causing strain on sites in areas of higher density senior populations while leaving other individuals having to travel 50 miles to get to a clinical trial site. This has led to lower performance and delayed timelines.3 With the enhancements to the HealthVerity PDI, researchers can discover physician practices that have representative patient populations for race, age and diagnosis to solve these recruitment challenges.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, 57.8% of the population is White/Caucasian, 12.1% is Black/African American and 18.7% of the population is Hispanic/Latino. The FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research reported; however, that 75% of participants in 2020 clinical trials were White/Caucasian, only 8% were Black/African American and 11% were Hispanic/Latino, demonstrating the need for greater equity in clinical trials.2

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a high importance on increasing equity in clinical trials, with Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D. stating in a release that “…ensuring meaningful representation of racial and ethnic minorities in clinical trials is fundamental to public health… [and] greater diversity will be a key focus of the agency to facilitate better treatments and better ways to fight diseases that disproportionately impact diverse communities.”4

“These statistics demonstrate how critical it is that researchers be able to work on clinical trials with physicians who have better access to patient populations representative of their particular study,” said Andrew Kress, CEO of HealthVerity. “We are proud to have the advanced technologies and privacy techniques to enable our clients to practice better medicine through diversity.”

HealthVerity embarks on the next chapter in its history

MAY 23, 2023

Today marks an historic day for HealthVerity as we launch our most ambitious effort yet to capture the imagination of our industry. As you may know, HealthVerity first disrupted the market by introducing software for identity management that was 10x more accurate than legacy alternatives. Our investments in privacy and governance technologies further led us to being the first in the industry to launch a marketplace that has now become the nation’s largest healthcare and consumer data ecosystem. Success has been hard fought, but customers have always appreciated our unique IPGE approach, based on the foundational elements of Identity, Privacy, Governance and Exchange as well as the strength of the data in HealthVerity Marketplace that supports their research objectives.

The market, however, never stands still and others have borrowed heavily from our marketing positioning, even introducing marketplaces of their own. While others make claims about how they can link data, we know that the token is broken and that no one can match our technological advantages in unlocking value from real-world data. HealthVerity recognizes that the time is right to move the market forward again and to establish a new standard for what it means to delight pharmaceutical, government, insurance and analytics clients.

It’s time to Synchronize the Science and empower customers to benefit from HealthVerity’s unique ability to synchronize transformational technologies with the nation’s largest healthcare data ecosystem to power previously unattainable outcomes and to advance the science. We are the only company that has the ideal combination of mission critical software and data expertise to enable clients to get more out of the hundreds of millions of comprehensive patient journeys that we can deliver in a privacy-protected, HIPAA-compliant manner.

It’s also time to prove to our customers that Synced beats Linked. As such, we are pleased to introduce HealthVerity FLOW, our pharma-class SaaS solution that synchronizes unparalleled identity management with built-in privacy and data governance, allowing customers to discover and exchange a near limitless combination of healthcare and consumer data at a record pace. HealthVerity FLOW is designed to open new pathways to progress by integrating all of our core capabilities in a modular software architecture that is ideal for broadening data capture and performance for registries, clinical trials and commercial endeavors. Even more importantly, HealthVerity FLOW enables clients to comply with regulatory frameworks and to compliantly study comprehensive patient journeys throughout the therapeutic lifecycle. We are already seeing adoption by top pharma during pre-launch and believe that data-driven customers will quickly recognize the superiority of synchronization.

On behalf of all of HealthVerity, we are so excited by today’s announcement. We join our customers in agreeing that innovation is best achieved when you Sync Big. This is a powerful notion and one that will drive everything we will do in the years ahead.
